Melinda Suchard
Associate Professor Melinda Suchard holds an MBBCh degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg with specialist MMED and FCPath qualifications in clinical pathology and a PhD in immunology. From 2013 -2021 she was the head the Centre for Vaccines and Immunology at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases in South Africa. The Centre is a World Health Organisation Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio, Measles and Rubella. Dr Suchard is the past president of the South African Immunology Society. She played a key role in establishing a masters course in vaccinology at the University in 2019 before her recent move to Melbourne in 2022. The focus of her research is host-microbe balance and immune tolerance to infectious disease. She has a particular interest in the tolerogenic enzyme indoleamine 2,3 dioxygenase and the nicotinamide synthesis pathway for the development of novel host-derived biomarkers for Tuberculosis.
